    Marketing Director

     We are looking for a Marketing Director to join our tea m (full-time, remote-friendly). The Marketing Director will be responsible for:

    • Reach 5,000 gardeners by the end of 2022 as measured by unique gardener accounts (currently 2,100+ gardeners are signed up across the country) 
    • 1,500 of these gardeners participate by donating their homegrown produce at least once 
    • Double our social media following and engagement, including Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin
    • Other marketing key results to be built in collaboration with CEO

Marketing Director, Remote

Hours: Full time, Salaried & Exempt

Location: 100% Remote Work Opportunity

Reports To: CEO

Compensation: $70,000-80,000, depending on experience, plus benefits including flexible PTO

About Fresh Food Connect: 

This year, an estimated 54 million Americans, or one in four children, will face food insecurity. At least 40% of food in the US goes to waste, becoming a contributor to climate change. At the same time, gardening is on the rise, with one third of Americans currently growing food. 

Fresh Food Connect is on a mission to grow a more local and resilient food system by connecting gardeners with their communities. Fresh Food Connect licenses its technology to hunger relief organizations (“operators”) around the country who use the mobile app to coordinate donations of homegrown produce to create positive change in the local food system. Individual gardeners sign up on the Fresh Food Connect app to donate their backyard grown produce that would perhaps otherwise go to waste. Fresh Food Connect conveniently helps solve “the zucchini problem” by directing surplus produce from the home or community garden to hunger relief centers, either through a pick-up or drop-off model, depending on local operations, and ultimately to members of the community who need it most. We envision homegrown food within reach.

Fresh Food Connect is growing fast: we first started in one zip code in Denver with 3 operators, and now are working in 24 states (Plus Guam!) and over 1,700 zip codes with 66 operators. We believe that at scale, small contributions from many individuals across the country can have a massive impact on food security, hunger relief, and climate change. 

About the Marketing Director Opportunity

Fresh Food Connect has grown quickly and is now scaling across the country. We are seeking a motivated, ambitious, growth-focused, experienced and creative self-starter to join our leadership team to help us double our impact in 2022. The Marketing Director will join our staff of two and become an integral part of our non-profit organization, and must be ready to jump in and lead the organization’s marketing, communications and PR efforts. 

Roles & Responsibilities

Marketing, Communications & PR for Fresh Food Connect National 

  • Lead the development and implementation of creative and ambitious marketing and communications plans to reach organizational goal (See goal section below) 
  • Responsible for measuring the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance Fresh Food Connect’s image and position within the field and the general public.
  • Manage content marketing and SEO strategy and tactics, including maintaining an active and successful blog and overseeing Google Ad contract.
  • Continually develop and implement the existing Social Media Action Plan. Create and post all social media content, and engage on platforms. Ensure consistent, strategic, on-brand and inspiring messaging.
  • Responsible for the creation of all printed and electronic creative materials such as the Fresh Food Connect website, paid ads, social media graphics, banners, signs, flyers, impact reports, fundraising one-pagers, etc.
  • Proactively secure earned media including local news outlets in the areas with Fresh Food Connect operators, and national news. In partnership with the CEO, create messaging for earned media opportunities.

Operator Marketing 

  • Collaborate with Product and Operations Director to determine operator needs.
  • Create marketing/communications/PR best practices and recommendations for Fresh Food Connect operators to help them recruit gardeners in their communities. Provide the counsel/coaching, materials and tools needed to ensure the success of each operator as we scale from 66 current operators to a goal of 100 this year.
  • Evaluate and track the success of operator strategies to adjust as needed over time.

Fundraising Support 

  • Support CEO on specific fundraising tasks on occasion, including drafting grant proposals and reports.
  • Implement marketing strategy for individual donor campaigns.
  • Support in the development of a corporate sponsorship program.
  • Create collateral to support fundraising and pitches as needed.

Organizational Leadership 

  • Serve as a thought partner with the CEO, Product and Operations Director, and Board of Directors to ensure the strategic development of the organization.
  • In partnership with the CEO, Product and Operations Director, and Board of Directors, share responsibility for the creation and achievement of the organization’s mission, vision, and goals.
  • Support the organizational budgeting process. Build, manage and monitor marketing budgets. 
  • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to all areas of marketing/ communications/ PR and report progress regularly.
  • Assist with other functions of the organization as needed or assigned.

Key Results this Position Supports

Responsible for and accountable to these key results for 2022:

  • Reach 5,000 gardeners by the end of 2022 as measured by unique gardener accounts (currently 2,100+ gardeners are signed up across the country) 
  • 1,500 of these gardeners participate by donating their homegrown produce at least once 
  • Double our social media following and engagement, including Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin
  • Other marketing key results to be built in collaboration with CEO 

Collaborate on the achievement of these organizational key results: 

  • Facilitate the donation of 120,000 lbs of homegrown food total, including 60,000 lbs through 3,000 donations tracked in the app.
  • Grow number of operators to reach 100 
  • Expand to 2,500 zip codes across the country (currently 1700)
  • Internal audit of operators shows at least 75% of operators have completed 50% of co-marketing items

  • You have an awesome eye for design, and have at least some experience with digital design (specifically with Canva).
  • You are adaptable and aren’t afraid of ambiguity, but rather see it as an opportunity to contribute and create. A track record of success in a startup-type environment is a plus.
  • You are able to utilize your marketing and communications skills to support a wide variety of efforts across the organization, as we all wear many hats as a current staff of two, a working Board of Directors and small group of talented volunteers/interns.
  • You have strong experience in creating, leading and implementing marketing and communication strategies. While there will be a lot of room for growth, this position needs to hit the ground running on leading the organization’s marketing and communications. 
  • You are a fantastic writer and communicator. 
  • Some combination of experience in the following fields is preferred: food systems, climate change, technology, community based solutions, national scope, nonprofit.
  • Must be fluent in English. Spanish language skills are a plus.
